The Leadership & Organizational Development ÔSustainableÕ Process
For Building a High Performance Team (Organization)

A model by Bill OÕMara PhD

The following is the model in which my new book, The Path of the Enlightened Leaders, is based.   The model outlines the Unity-Energy-Impeccability steps with clear behavior check points in each to help you begin to have greater clarity in steps you can take to create more team peak performance.  Enjoy putting this into play and being the best!

UNITY

(I)  Create the Team Strategic Plan (TSP)

Where are we going?  How are we structured?  Who is doing what?

Mission: What the Team is to Accomplish

á           The Vision, Mission and Values are established and supported.

á           The Vision of effective teamwork is identified.

á           The teamÕs Mission is clear.

á           Team leader and members establish shared team goals (Identify KOGs)

á           Team Standards of Behavior are identified, committed to and adhered to.

á           Individual Leadership Goals are identified, committed to and adhered to.

Structure: The Way in Which the Team is Organized

á           The team reporting and coordinating structures are clear.

á           All members have job descriptions outlining their primary position responsibilities, with core

competencies established.

Roles: Who Does What

á           Team leader and member roles are clear, understood and supported.

(II)   Communicate and Align to optimize Unity of effort

How will we get there together?  What are the Best practices?   Methods/Processes?   Procedures?

Process:

á           Live the Plan!  EC Meetings and all execution driven by plan.

á           Meet as KOG teams weekly to clarify, simplify, and amplify key strategies (Fundamentals and Big Play behaviors) of success.  Benchmark the best for ideas.

á           Communicate these behaviors cross departments and down the chain of command so all are living it.

á           Leaders hold all and each other accountable to deliver.

Procedures:

á           Team meetings are well planned (with agenda) with clear roles, resulting in teamwork and quality outcomes.

á           Decision making language and methods are clear and consistently used.

á           Communication Model is identified and used.

á           Communication channels are clear and open with information freely shared.

á           Rewards and recognition are individual and team based and delivered daily.

á           Leader and members share responsibility for teamÕs success.  Busyness is confrontedÉ only passionate focus on the plan (delivering the behaviors) is acceptable.

ENERGY

(III)  Empower for Unified, Energized & Impeccable Execution

Be Passionate about the delivery of Plan.   We achieve the metrics through a passionate execution excellence.   Train/Practice the processes in the operations manual.  Drive Leadership.

Culture:   Supporting energy, impeccability in our work

á           Instill Leadership by example.  Do what you want ÔthemÕ to do.  Walk the Talk togetherÉ.

á           Use Communication Model used daily in one on ones.

á           Use all CPP empowerment tools daily to motivate and develop:  EBA, MBWA, Coaching

á           Watch-Look-Listen, Train & coach daily to assure passionate Operational Execution.

á           Conduct short, fun, hi impact meetings (Performance metrics reviewed weekly - are we truly living our plan?)

á           Plan Standards are reinforced (ie:  top 10 standards for service behavior, product

quality/delivery and environment) needed to continue growth and meet overall objectives.

Relationships: The Quality of Interaction between Team Members:  Our level of unity.

á           The team norms are operationalized into behaviors that build trust, openness, collaboration, and

shared responsibility.

á           Violation of team norms is confronted by both leader and members.

á           The leader and members are skilled at giving and receiving balanced feedback.

á           Diversity is valued with all members operating in a climate free of harassment.

á           Conflict is surfaced, openly discussed, and resolved or managed effectively.

á           Maintaining a fun, upbeat, empowering work culture of WE is paramount to win big.

IMPECCABILITY

(IV)  Instill ongoing Learning & Innovation:

Continuous Improvement Is The Way.  Radical Efficiency.  Deliver impeccably, then Assess Performance, Review, Adjust.

á           Instill PDCA Cycle:  Each day:  Plan – Do – Check – Adjust (and in each meeting).

á           Continue to master Executional Excellence in all we do.  Master delivery of Fundamental & Big Plays.  Check & Adjust after each shift to Learn, Innovate, Create Breakthroughs, Be the best!

á           Use constant Feedback via ÔSelf AssessmentÕ system to Track and Update Operations Systems.

á           Innovation circles (Leadership Council) – meet bi-monthly and funnel best ideas to GM.

á           GM & team analyzes and integrates best onesÉ

á           Repeat!  With a green mentality = SUSTAINABILITY!

Best to you,

Bill
